From Bands to DJ’ing Weddings……
I had my first paid live gig when I was 16. It was an outdoor party with a band playing classic rock. Then I played part-time with various bands for over 10 years while I got myself established in life. I made the jump to performing full time(and it felt like I’d stepped off a cliff….lol) almost 20 years ago, and was playing 5 nights a week all across Southern Ontario.
After 2 years of night after night singing, I realized I needed a backup in case I couldn’t play live anymore due to losing/injuring my voice, physical injury, etc…So a friend suggested DJ’ing to me and said the piano/vocal and DJ would be a great match for weddings in one package, and it would give my voice a rest for a night. Turns out he was right! Within 3 years, on word of mouth recommendations only, I found myself fully immersed in the DJ business, doing more DJ than live music gigs for weddings, buck and does, birthday parties, etc.
I have to admit that in the beginning I wasn’t sure DJ’ing was for me, but I seemed to have a knack for playing the right music at the right time, so the phone kept ringing. I also found I enjoyed the positive spirit of friends and family at weddings and parties. I have met so many awesome people and their families, and feel honoured to have played a part in a major life event for them.
And here I am 700 + weddings later..It’s been a enjoyable and fulfilling ride, and looking forward to the weddings I have in 2016!
